Government Skin Checks

Why should you provide skin checks for your Employee’s?

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Employers in Australia should provide skin checks for their staff due to several important reasons:

1. High UV Exposure

Australia has one of the highest rates of UV radiation exposure in the world, which increases the risk of skin cancer, particularly for outdoor workers. Extended exposure to UV radiation is a major risk factor for developing skin cancers such as melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

2. Health and Well-being of Employees

Skin cancer is preventable if detected early. Regular skin checks can help identify skin abnormalities, such as moles or spots, before they develop into something more serious. Early detection increases the chances of successful treatment, leading to better health outcomes for workers.

3. Workplace Duty of Care

Employers have a legal duty to ensure the health and safety of their employees. Providing skin checks can be part of a broader workplace health and safety initiative, ensuring that employers fulfill their duty of care under Australian work health and safety laws.

4. Reducing Worker Absenteeism

Skin cancer, when left undiagnosed or untreated, can lead to more serious health issues, including lengthy treatments and even long-term absences from work. Regular skin checks can help catch skin issues early, preventing more serious health problems that may result in absenteeism.

5. Promoting a Culture of Health and Safety

By offering skin checks, employers can foster a culture of health and safety within the workplace. It shows employees that the employer is committed to their long-term well-being and health, which can also improve employee morale and retention.

6. Compliance with Occupational Health Standards

In some cases, providing regular health screenings like skin checks may align with workplace health guidelines, insurance requirements, or industry standards, ensuring the employer is compliant with occupational health regulations.

7. Prevention and Early Intervention

Employers who offer skin checks demonstrate a proactive approach to health care. Early identification of potential issues such as skin cancer can save lives and reduce the financial and emotional burden on both employees and the employer.

How does the Sun cause Skin Cancer?

The sun causes skin cancer mainly through ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When your skin gets exposed to the sun for too long, the UV rays can damage the DNA in your skin cells. This damage can cause the cells to grow and divide in an abnormal way, which can lead to cancer over time.

There are two main types of UV radiation involved:
  1. UVB rays – These are the main cause of sunburn and can directly damage your skin cells’ DNA.
  2. UVA rays – These penetrate deeper into the skin and can also cause long-term damage, contributing to aging and increasing cancer risk.

When the DNA in skin cells is damaged and the body doesn’t repair it properly, the cells can start growing uncontrollably, which is how cancer starts. This is why it’s important to protect your skin from excessive sun exposure by using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding the sun during peak hours.

Award Winning Quality

Our doctors have extensive skin cancer training, with over 15 years experience in providing corporate services and running established skin cancer clinics. We are small team, with a clear focus on your employees safety.
